My Evaluation: College Magazine

My college magazine uses many conventional features, such as a masthead at the top of the front cover and cover lines. I have also put the date and price of the magazine on the front cover as many magazines on the market do so. I have also used a medium close up of a student, which is a conventional shot and also the audience would relate to the student on the cover of the magazine, as it’s for college students.

My magazine represents teenagers as it’s for college students. The girl on the front cover is young and has a book in her hand - she’s also stood in the Wyke library, which represents what student life is about. The language I have used on the front is also relatable to students as I have used exclamation marks at the end of my cover lines as it makes it informal, which is the stereotypical thing teenagers like to read. Not only is the magazine aimed at people already at Wyke, but also people thinking of coming to Wyke as the magazine would tell them information about the college which could interest them; it could also persuade them to come as they might like the look of the sports activities that would appear in the magazine and also the different courses that the students are enjoying. They might also like the look of the college campus, which would feature in many of the photos. The title of the magazine “Life At Wyke” would interest them if they’d like to know more about the college, so it would persuade them to buy it. It also says on the cover “the wonders of student life” - this is a slightly exaggerated phrase I have used to persuade the readers to buy the magazine.

The colours I have used on the front cover are connotes of Autumn as the issue would come out in October. I have used Earth/Autumn colours throughout the front cover and the contents page as a “house style” and so it doesn’t look messy. The institution of the magazine would be Wyke College as that’s what the magazine’s about and everything in the magazine would be about the latest news at the college.

The way the student is smiling on the cover denotes that college is an enjoyable time. The way in which she has a book in her hand shows that college is not only about making friends and having a good time, but studying as well. The magazine would appeal to the audience as the cover lines are about the latest events happening in and around Wyke; this would make the audience pick up the magazine as stereotypical teenagers don’t like to miss out on things and would want to be involved in things that are going on. The magazine is a reasonable price of £1.50 as then students can afford it. The front cover is the most persuasive part of the magazine as it’s the first thing the readers will see. Students thinking of attending Wyke would see the cover line “outstanding A level results...” and immediately recognise that it’s a good college.
